Ad Hoc Challenges

Purpose: It is important to know about existing challenges when working with patients with limited English proficiency to minimize misunderstandings of ones treatment plan. Knowing these challenges of Ad Hoc interpreters, will contribute to existing knowledge with the hopes of reducing barriers between patients and physicians. Methods: Researchers conducted interviews that took place either in person, through Facetime, or Zoom. These interviews occurred in confidential settings, meaning interviewers refrained from public settings to assure confidentiality. Findings: This study included six participants (5 female and 1 male) who were all of Latinx background, some in which were U.S born citizens and a few who were born in other countries. Discussion: While AH's translating for family members serves as a protective factor, not including other intersectionalities, such as culture has the potential to ultimately affect the treatment plan.
